University of Freiburg Medical Centre Department of Internal Medicine II: Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology and Clinical Infectiology
The Department of Internal Medicine II (Medical Director Prof. Dr. Robert Thimme) deals with the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In the treatment of pancreatic disorders, the Department boasts outstanding expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of emergencies as well as in endoscopic interventions to improve the quality of life. The joint interdisciplinary endoscopy unit, though, is only one of many areas of excellence in this department. In close cooperation with the Centre for Gastrointestinal Tumours and the Comprehensive Cancer Centre Freiburg, innovative and traditional oncological treatments are delivered through the medium of chemotherapy.
University of Freiburg Medical Centre Department of Radiotherapy
The Department of Radiology under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. A.-L. Grosu (see photo left) treats approx. 2600 new patients each year. The Department boasts the latest technical equipment for the planning and implementation of fractionated radiotherapy, brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and intraoperative radiotherapy as well as two wards with a total of 40 beds. Its area of responsibility includes the entire spectrum of Radiological Oncology as well as the radiotherapy of benign diseases. In the treatment of pancreatic cancer, radiotherapy is included in the study through the pre-treatment of primarily inoperable pancreatic tumours.
University of Freiburg Medical Centre Department of Radiodiagnostics
The Department of Radiodiagnostics under the directorship of Prof. Dr. M. Langer (see photo left) deals with the examination of benign and malignant diseases of the human body, using the latest state-of-the-art imaging procedures. It offers the entire spectrum of modern imaging diagnostics: computer tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance tomography, ultrasound examinations and conventional radiodiagnostics. Angiography deals with the treatment of angiostenoses (narrowing of blood vessels) and haemorrhages (bleeding), but also the treatment of tumours by delivering patient-friendly treatment through catheters introduced into the blood vessels. There is also a special expertise and research activity in the diagnosis of rare pancreatic disorders.
Working Group of Patients after Pancreatectomy (AdP)
Through its work of many years, the AdP gives affected patients the opportunity of acquiring greater knowledge about the various vital problems and their treatment before and after pancreatic surgery. The AdP is supported in its work first and foremost by its Scientific Advisory Board, on which physicians, psychotherapists, dieticians and social workers work together and combine their knowledge and experience to the benefit of the patients.
